Sewer pipe systems can be a problem in older homes, and issues often come to light during the process of either selling or buying the home. Unfortunately, this system is not something that is cheap to fix. However, because the sewer plays an important role in the plumbing system for the home, it is not something that you can just ignore. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that even though a sewer system may appear to be in good condition, anything can happen and it can happen quickly. When the sewer system breaks, it has the potential to cause damage to the home, cost a lot of money to fix and generally cause a lot of stress for homeowners.
In order to avoid the anxiety that comes along with knowing that the sewer system can go bad at any time, have a sewer scope procedure done.
Sewer Scoping Is Not Expensive
Sewer scoping is relatively inexpensive, and it can be done by a home inspector. A cable is run through the sewer line. It runs from the house to the septic tank or municipal sewer. Attached to the cable is a very small camera that can identify areas of concern (clogs, breaks, blockages). The homeowner or buyer can then view the footage to figure out what is going on with the sewer line.
If the line is blocked or damaged in some way, it could be costly to fix. If you are purchasing a home, having a sewer scope done by a certified professional home inspector can help you know what you are up against. If the procedure indicates an issue, you can negotiate with the seller to have it fixed. If the seller will not cooperate, you do not have to go through with the purchase.
While there are a lot of costs associated with buying a home, having a sewer line scoping procedure is a smart idea and should be seriously considered for peace of mind.
